It has been definitely established that emotions play a role in the fluctuation of sugar level in cases of diabetes. There is also considerable growing evidence that such factors may be important in the precipitation of the condition. This conclusion would not leave out of consideration known hereditary factors and the role of obesity. An attempt has been made to explore some of the neuro-endocrine mechanisms through which emotional factors may find expression. Of special significance would appear to be the anterior pituitary, but as yet the degree to which it is subject to psychologic influences is undetermined. Also of particular interest in this and other psychosomatic conditions, such as hyperthyroidism, are the pathways from the cortex to the autonomic centers and endocrine glands regulating metabolism.
