Psychotic Response to Attempted Psychotherapy in a Patient with Hyperthyroidism

J. BROOKS DUGAN M.D.1

1 Pinel Foundation Seattle, Washington

A discussion is presented of a thyrotoxic individual who became psychotic during preoperative management. A relationship between the development of his psychosis and his experience in psychotherapy is postulated, based upon a consideration of his particular dynamics and the nature of the transference in therapy. Speculations as to the possible complications of psychotherapy with toxic patients are advanced.
