An epileptic seizure developed in a 46-year-old catatonic patient, with a family and personal history of convulsions in early childhood, when psychologically traumatic material was presented to her. There was no history of spontaneous convulsive seizure for more than 40 years prior to the structured interview. Recordings with depth electrodes were obtained for an extended period prior to and throughout the structured interview. The psychological and physiological implications of these observations have been discussed.
