In this communication we have sought to present evidence of the basically pre-oedipal genesis and content of the psychological aspects of anorexia nervosa. In addition we have emphasized the view that despite the typical obsessional facade, the underlying condition is in our experience a psychotic process. Finally, we have indicated pessimism regarding the efficacy of so-called "insight therapy," believing that the most effective therapeutic tool in this malady consists in the attainment of some gratification through a human relationship of the vast anaclitic needs of these patients.
