A Scientific Approach to Clinical Research in Psychosomatic Medicine

DAVID M. KISSEN M.D.1

1 Department of Psychological Medicine, University of Glasgow Scotland

A critical discussion is given on some aspects of clinical research in psychosomatic medicine.

Arguments against the psychosomatic viewpoint are discussed critically.

The present scientific status of clinical research is discussed and appraised with special reference to psychoanalytical and other similar deep techniques.

Reference is made to the need for a common accepted understanding of the terms used.

The basis of the author's personal research methods are described. These are objective control, mensuration, and analysis. The dependence on available facilities is stressed.

Some illustrative research methods are given.
