Studies with Experimental Neurosis and Drug-Induced Ulceration of the Colon in Dogs

IRVING A. WARREN M.D.1 and SIDNEY D. KOBERNICK M.D., Ph.D.1

1 Departments of Medicine and Patholology, Sinai Hospital of Detroit and Wayne State University College of Medicine

An attempt has been made to reproduce in experimental dogs the lesions of chronic ulcerative colitis. The method consisted of two phases: (1) the preliminary induction of an experimental neurosis employing the technique of Masserman, which introduces a conflictual situation (fear vs. hunger) in the daily feeding, and (2) the daily administration of a cholinergic agent for prolonged periods to produce chronic congestive and ulcerative changes in the intestinal mucosa.

The animals were observed clinically, by sigmoidoscopic examination, biopsy of the rectosigmoid mucosa, and postmortem examination. Lesions resembling chronic ulcerative colitis were not observed.
