Gastric Secretion During a Medical Interview

MARVIN C. GOLDMAN M.D.1

1 2202 Lloyd Center Portland,Ore

Basal hypersecretion of acid is sometimes not seen in duodenal ulcer patients, and changes in secretion are not correlated with time of activity of ulcers. These observations cast some doubt on the idea that stress leads to hypersecretion which, in turn, leads to duodenal ulcer. In this study, an attempt was made to observe basal gastric secretion during an interview to see if the responsiveness of acid secretion of the duodenal ulcer patient was abnormal when confronted with this stress situation. Greater responsiveness of ulcer patients was found, but some overlap with the nonulcer group still existed.
