Relationship Between Bender-Gestalt Test Scores and the Response of Patients with Intractable Duodenal Ulcer to Surgery

G. R. PASCAL Ph.D.1 and J. C. THOROUGHMAN M.D.1

1 Veterans Administration Hospital, Atlanta, Ga.

Sixty-nine patients with duodenal ulcer have been administered the BenderGestalt test at or about the time of surgery for intractability, were evaluated 2 yr. postoperatively, then classified as showing "good" or "poor" surgical results. A marked relationship was found between the Bender-Gestalt test performance and the patients' responses to surgery. It is suggested that the Bender-Gestalt might well be included as a part of a battery of tests used for predicting surgical success with intractable duodenal ulcer patients.
