A metabolic measure of chronic noxious stimulation may be the free fatty acid reserve. This is operationally defined as the amount of free fatty acid present in the circulation following a large dose of L-norepinephrine. Evidence is presented that restraint causes a significant lowering of the free fatty acid reserve in rats.
