Studies of groups of women with documented histories of duodenal ulcer are presented. The case material of 175 women was reviewed for onset, course, symptoms, and laboratory findings. Sixty-two of these women were interviewed by an internist, according to a schedule. In a related study 41 women with duodenal ulcer were interviewed by psychiatrists, then graded for degrees of anxiety and character disorder. Wherever possible, the data were compared both by age and by menopausal status. Typical clinical histories were seen more often in the premenopausal patients. Few clear differences were present in the medical findings. Significant differences in anxiety and character disorder ratings were found.
