Some Methodological Problems in Clinical Psychosomatic Research with Special Reference to Chest Disease

DAVID M. KISSEN B.Sc., M.D.1

1 Psychosomatic Research Unit, University Department of Psychological Medicine, Southern General Hospital, Glasgow, Scotland

Clinical research in psychosomatic medicine requires a scientific approach of a standard at least as high as that demanded of research in other areas of science and medicine. Practical difficulties in achieving scientific accuracy in clinical psychosomatic research are discussed and illustrated with data from controlled clinical studies. The effect of such difficulties on validity of findings is appraised. Suggestions are made concerning several aspects of methodology which might enhance validity.
