Continuous 6-hour urine samples were collected from 4 healthy young adult men during 4 control days and 9 days of sleep deprivation. Considerable variation in creatinine levels was present in the samples from all 4 subjects, and there was a significant diurnal pattern during the control period. This diurnal pattern, however, was undetectable during sleep deprivation. Urine volume correlated very highly with creatinine in all subjects, and it appears that creatinine excretion was a volume-dependent phenomenon. A more even fluid intake and urine volume throughout the day and night during the 205 hours of sleeplessness may have accounted for the disappearance of the diurnal creatinine pattern during this period.
