Because mentation is dependent on the biochemical milieu of the nervous system, it is important to investigate the role of endocrine and metabolic abnormalities in psychiatric disorders. Disturbances of certain physiologic parameters such as the level of calcium, steroid hormones, glucose and thyroid hormones result in profound changes in mentation. Many of these are reversed by correcting the underlying abnormality.
