Psychiatric Aspects of Patients with Unstable Diabetes Mellitus

Psychiatric interviews and psychologic tests were done in seven adult patients with unstable diabetes mellitus during prolonged metabolic investigations in a clinical study unit. Each patient's clinical characteristics were defined on the basis of continuous monitoring of blood glucose and intermittent measurements of other biochemical variables. No specific personality profile was found, and the individuals reacted in different ways to their chronic illness. Continuous blood glucose monitoring of one such insulin-dependent patient during a severely stressful emotional experience did not demonstrate an evident effect of the experience on blood glucose levels. The findings are discussed with reference to emotions influencing blood glucose behavior, the impact of diabetes on personality, and the effect of personality on diabetes.
