Editor’s Note:
In my 10 years as Editor, I owe certain people some extra thanks. I have been blessed by superb managing editors (Ruth Newton, Patricia Valiton, and Karen Anderson), and I would like to thank them one more time for their painstaking efforts and unflagging enthusiasm. The Editorial Board has been a source of excellent counsel steering the Journal on a sound course. I would like to thank my long-time Statistical Editor, Charles Berry, and my current and former Associate Editors Bob Ader, Michael Irwin, Dick Jennings, and James Levenson; you have been outstanding. I am grateful to the American Psychosomatic Society for the honor of having been Editor, grateful to our past Editors who bequeathed me such an outstanding Journal, and to George Degnon Associates who have managed the American Psychosomatic Society so skillfully. Finally, I am grateful to my family for allowing me to take this scholarly voyage for a decade. You have "shared me" with my manuscripts every night after supper. We thank the National Gallery of Art for permission to reprint Lumber Schooners at Evening on Penobscot Bay, 1860. The Appendix to this editorial acknowledges with appreciation the individuals who reviewed manuscripts for Psychosomatic Medicine between October 1, 2000 and September 30, 2001.

Fitz Hugh Lane (1804–1865) is one of the most prominent 19th century American painters. His canvases radiate a serenity and luminescence that still enthrall the viewer 150 years later. One would never guess from the calm stillness that pervades his maritime paintings that Lane’s early years were anything but calm. As a toddler, he was seen eating the deadly "apple-peru" (or tomato as it was later known) and shortly afterward he fell ill. The illness left him with a permanent lower limb weakness. His family attributed this devastating handicap both to misfortune and to inadequate doctoring (1). From today’s vantage point, it is interesting to examine both of these mis-attributions. In the 19th century, strange plants were looked upon suspiciously in the recognition that not all that is "natural" is "good." What afflicted Lane, however, was not a tomato but was most likely polio, and it is certainly hard to impugn his physician’s care just because he needed crutches for the rest of his life.

So, the family was wrong on two counts concerning etiology and contributing risk. They were, nonetheless, sadly accurate in the perception that their little boy’s paresis was permanent and profound. However, what Lane did was to surmount his adversity. He coped, and he coped despite being described as moody, nervous, and irritable. He dragged himself along the Maine coast "hiking" as best as he could, clambering up his beloved schooners to behold the majesty of the world, and then delicately recreating what he saw on canvas (2).

Lane was well regarded in his lifetime. Unlike Millet and Daumier (3, 4) for instance, Lane was not dogged by constant financial peril. He just lived alone and painted, painted some of the most glorious seascapes ever executed. These canvases are most often set at twilight, touched gently by a darkening blue sky with rose highlights (see Figure). His work conveys an extraordinary sensitivity to balance and poise—all the more remarkable considering his early struggles as a crippled toddler. In so many ways, Fitz Hugh Lane could be considered a "poster child" for successful coping.

As he aged, Lane painted canvases that focus increasingly on dusk (5). They are elegies of stillness. I love these sunset canvases and always eagerly look forward to sitting down on museum benches and studying them. I feel Lane reaching out over the space of a century and a half.

This issue of Psychosomatic Medicine marks the sunset of my editorship. With Lane in mind, I would like to reach out and thank the many authors, reviewers, and readers who made my job possible. In my 10 years as editor, I reviewed approximately 2,700 manuscripts and wrote to colleagues about 15,000 times asking their help in judging these manuscripts. I have had to say "no" about two thirds of the time and hope that those who received my "no" letters have forgiven me for bearing such tidings. Even when I had to reject these manuscripts, they taught me much. I learned about the contours of the field of psychosomatic medicine. I learned what people are interested in studying. I learned where research is thriving, and I learned what approaches are being used to study these complex phenomena. I appreciate the willingness of authors to let me see their work and attempt to appraise it fairly. I also appreciate the generosity of those colleagues who have provided peer review and done so dispassionately and rapidly. And finally, I am deeply grateful to those colleagues whose work we have published; you have helped to define the parameters of excellent scholarship.

As I begin my sunset cruise as Editor, I would like you to know that we have a vibrant research field whose influence can be felt ripping throughout all of medicine and the social sciences. It is a colorful field, illumined by many different brush strokes and tints. I believe the field is healthy, and I know this Journal will continue to set the course.

It is especially gratifying to turn over the editorship to David Sheps, MD, an outstanding researcher who will be our first internist as Editor-in-Chief. I know the Journal will continue to set the course. To David, all good fortune at the tiller, and I look forward to joining the ranks of your admiring readers.
