ERRATA
While conducting a new study, the authors of an article published last year discovered several errors in the data reported (Karst M, Rahe-Meyer N, Gueduek A, Hoy L, Borsutzky M, Passie T. Abnormality in the Self-monitoring Mechanism in Patients With Fibromyalgia and Somatoform Pain Disorder. Psychosom Med. 2005; 67:111–5). The authors assert that the errors do not affect their main results and conclusions. Two lines of corrected text for Table 1 appear below. The first two sentences of the Results section should read as follows:
"The groups did not differ significantly at baseline with respect to age, gender, VAS-anxiety 1, and VAS-pain. STAIX1 (p = .020 for FM vs. NS) and STAIX2 (p = .046 for FM vs. NS and p = .030 for SPD vs. NS) showed significant differences from the control group (Table 1)."
The authors add the following comments for their discussion:
"The significant elevated STAIX2 levels in the FM and SPD groups may reflect an increased level of background anxiety with which individuals suffering from FM or SPD usually operates. Surprisingly, compared with the control group in the patient groups, the situational anxiety measured by STAIX1 and visual analog scale (VAS) were not as marked or consistently elevated as expected. This may be related to the trial setting, in which at least one of the investigators was almost always well-known to the particular patient or volunteer. However, in a future study anxiety may be addressed as an independent factor that may interfere with the correct functioning of the self-monitoring mechanism."
